A Fair Deal for Coventry

These elections are crucial for you, for your family, and for Coventry. Like you, Coventry is my home: my mother was born and grew up in Hillfields and I have lived here since university, now with a growing family and small children of my own. I have watched council tax rise higher with worse public services to show for it, all while Coventry City Council loses millions through mismanagement, as we have seen with the loss-making Coombe Abbey Hotel and the wasted opportunity of the City of Culture. This directly leads to the failing services we all see: closed youth centres, hospices, and too little support for young people looking for work and a future in this city.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The Liberal Democrats have a fair deal that is practical and deliverable. We will demand an independent governance review of the Council, and we will make it a red line before any future council tax rise. More importantly, we will work to fix the basics that we all expect, such as tackling fly-tipping and improving refuse collections to make our streets cleaner and improving our existing cycle lanes and making them work for everyone, rather than building new paths that go unused. It means fighting for Coventry’s police and fire brigade to work with our neighbours in Warwickshire, cutting response times and making better use of your money rather than sending our limited resources towards Birmingham.

We will invest in Coventry’s future with a council sanctioned Development Corporation to build a genuine community living in the city centre and revitalise city centre businesses. Working with the major energy companies based in the city to put solar panels on council buildings and car parks, reducing your bills. A replanted Forest of Arden, using indigenous Warwickshire species, to protect ancient woodland for the next generation. On transport, we will fight for new stations at Coundon and Green Lane, and for the doubling of the Coventry–Leamington track that Network Rail promised over a decade ago but has yet to deliver.

Coventry is a city we can all be proud of. At the heart of England, it is a city that has risen from the ashes before and has done so not through division, but through people coming together. The Sky Blues have achieved a return to the promised land of the Premier League after a generation away. Coventry is the city of peace and reconciliation, one that looks outward and works together with no time for the politics of blame and division. Your choice on the 7th of May is straightforward – do you want the same as usual with failing council leadership, or will you vote for the Liberal Democrats and a council that will be work for you and deliver a fair deal for everyone across Coventry?
