Liberal Democrats Continue to Campaign on Green Issues
The Liberal Democrats have been campaigning hard for the greenbelt.
Liberal Democrats were out supporting the Save Our Greenbelt campaigners in Coventry city centre on 14th November where residents from throughout the city held a march and rally in their fight against the City Councils Core Strategy. With this strategy the Conservative led City Council intend to build some 33,500 new homes on land which includes the greenbelt Lib Dems Cllr. Russell Field and Brian Patton were some of the first to raise objections to these proposals when they submitted petitions opposing building on the last bits of greenbelt in Henley ward.
Brian Patton said:
This fight must continue while the government inspectors are here to look at these plans put forward by the Conservative city council rather than be willing to contest the Labour Government directive.
Liberal Democrats were also the first to campaign against the Council’s plans to cut a bus lane through Hearsall Common with invaluable support from 2000 concerned residents who signed a successful petition Lib Dem Derek Benefield organised against the bus lane despite fierce Council opposition to the petition. This campaign also highlighted the danger to our green spaces from road developments as well as housing.
Lib Dem Activist, Derek Benefield, said:
I was pleased join Brian and the campaigners on Saturday but surprised to see MP Geoffrey Robinson and other Labour politicians whose Labour Government instigated the building homes on the greenbelt.
The Labour and Conservative stance on development on our green spaces makes it clear that out of the three main parties Lib-Dems are still the only ones who can say they have consistent ‘green’ credentials, with the others parties it depends on the time and the place
