Lib Dems Influence Coalition
The Liberal Democrats have managed to get a
number of their policies enacted through the
first coalition Government since the second
world war.
Increase the tax threshold, meaning those
on a low income pay less tax. This policy
will continue in the future.
Pupil premium - ensuring that education
funding reaches the poorest and most
disadvantaged pupils where ever they live.
Investing in Early years to give every child
a better start in life.
The Lib Dems accept the need to pay off the
deficit run up by the previous Labour
Government, even though doing so has
resulted in very serious cuts to public spending.
Cllr Russell Field said, “These cuts are not
pleasant and are not what I would have liked to
see. In the end, I accept that you can’t keep
spending when you have no money. The reality
is “Every pound spent on interest debts
on Labour’s £155billion deficit, is a
pound that cannot be spent on public
services.”
“The sooner the deficit is paid off, the sooner
we can get back to investing in our public
services.
“It is a shame the Labour Party are opposing
every single cut that has been proposed, even
though they had plans to do very similar. As
they caused the problem in the first place, I
find their anger at the cuts rather hypocritical.
“The good news is the Lib Dems have been
able to influence and shape Government policy
and ensure there is an element of fairness and
help for low income families despite the cuts.”
