Questions for Full Council

Question posed by Cllr Field for Full Council meeting 28th June 2011
To Cabinet member, City Services:
"Car sales on residential streets is a continuing problem in a number of places in Coventry and those selling them are finding ways around existing legislation restricting sales to one every 500 meters.

I have been informed that there are plans to look into restricting car sales accross the City using schedule 4 the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 Local Authorities, which allows the Council to impose restrictions on street trading and could restrict car sales to permit holders only across Coventry.

Can the Cabinet Member please confirm what progress is being made on this possible solution to a problem that is causing a nuisance for a number of residents in Sewall Highway, Upper Stoke and other areas of the City."

"This problem affects the ward I represent and other areas of the City, It's becoming an increasing problem, as these rogue traders have no regard for the community, the environment or the law. It is illegal to sell more than one car every 500 metres but these traders have found a way round this law. I am pushing the Council to look into these regulations and see if they can deal with this problem for good. Other Councils around the country do the same. It's time the spectacle of 20 cars for sale on a public green was dealt with."
